The
Wynyard Rotary Old Time Music Hall commenced in 1971 as a one-off fundraiser for
The Rotary Club of Wynyard. It was only ever intended to be performed once until
the new club could develop a "proper" project but each year it continued because
nothing else was available. The show was originally performed in a small local
theatre and developed cult status so that tickets became a much sought after commodity.
For several years tickets were sold on the black market at heavily inflated costs.
Members of the Rotary Club, their wives and a few invited guests write, produce
and perform this traditional show, recreating live theatre of the Edwardian era
but with enough local comment to make it interesting. The Show out grew the venue
and in 1987 it shifted to The Burnie Civic Centre where seating was available
for twice as many people.
It continues to break records, now selling close
to $40,000 worth of tickets per season. The show has been twice performed at the
Launceston Casino and in 1998 played to houses at the Theatre Royal in Hobart.
This
year the Rotary Club of Wynyard celebrates 40 years of Music Hall. The Visitor
information Centre hosted a launch of an exhibition to mark this occation. More....
